IRS Notices

Received an IRS Letter? Start by Understanding What It Means.

Not every IRS letter means the same thing.

Some notices request information. Others propose changes, identify balances, establish deadlines, or signal the beginning of a larger administrative process.

Before responding, understand:

What is the IRS asking?

Why is it asking?

What deadline applies?

What information does the IRS already have?

What happens if no action is taken?

Don't Ignore the Deadline

IRS correspondence may contain important response or appeal deadlines.

If you have received a notice, preserve the entire notice—including all pages and attachments—and identify the response date.

The First Response Is Not Always the Final Issue

An IRS request may be attempting to establish a particular fact or test a particular tax position.

Providing documents is sometimes necessary.

Understanding what those documents communicate can be equally important.

GWD helps taxpayers evaluate IRS correspondence, identify the underlying issue, organize relevant information, and determine an appropriate administrative response.
